Bits and Bytes

Ahhh work..... What do I do at work? And what does this 3 men got to do with it? Who are they? And what do they have got to do with what I do?.... Well they got everything to do with what I do everyday for the most of my working adult life. So who are they ?

Picture no.1 - Bill Gates... I think most of you should have recognized this guy, the richest man in the world. He's responsible for bringing us the Windows to our PCs at home. So how many headaches have he given me - MS-DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows 95  -  98 - 2000 - XP and now Vista. Remember the 286, 386DX, 486DX2-66 PCs ? How we were so proud if we have 4mb of memory. Then the Pentiums came from 166 right up to the P4 and now Intel Core 2 Duo. My first job was a working as a PC assembler once, and I remembered I put together my first 286 machine ... Damn! It was such a rush when it booted up! The later years of my working life have me become a Network Administrator with Windows Server / Active Directory, and I got to control a network of PCs.

Picture no.2 - Steve Jobs... Maybe you won't recognize him in an instance, but you would know his products very well - iPods, the world's most popular mp3 player, from Apple. Hahhh... Apple... My main job now in my current workplace... everything is Apple. I was there in the beginning 10 years ago, when they had LC II, LC III, Apple PowerMac 7200, 8500, 9000 right up to the G3, G4, G5 and now all iMacs, Mac Pro, Macbooks..... Yes I was there when they still run on OS 7, OS 8, OS 9 and OS X - Panther, Tiger and now 10.5 Leopard - which is what I'm starring at work every day to make it work. Now I'm administering the Mac OS X Server, controlling all the Macs in my workplace.

Picture no.3 - Linus Torvalds... I don't think you seen him around. He's the maker of the Linux Operating Systems. Here's my advice, forget about Windows - full of virus/spyware, forget about Apple - expensive hardware, and just go and install Linux (Ubuntu) in all your PCs or Macs. It has everything you ever use and most important of all - NO VIRUS/SPYWARE! Absolutely NONE! and Absoultely FREE! I remember 10 years ago, I had a go at Red Hat 3, and had to manually type for the KDE configuration, blurr like sotong. But now no longer need to use your brain noodles, all is point and click, and even plug and play. My recommendation for you is to go to Ubuntu (one of the many free Linux flavours) and download the 7.10 version, burn the image to CD, and install it to your PC. Google for Linux and read all about it. It doesn't need a megazillion megahertz speedy machine. Even a Pentium 3 will work nicely.

There you go, the 3 Operating Systems you ever find in this world. Windows, OS X and Linux. In the house, my children are using Windows XP with a PC, I am using Tiger 10.4.10 with a PowerMac dual pro, working with Leopard 10.5.2 with Macbook and my server at home is a Linux Ubuntu running Samba, and viewing movies with my Xbox, hacked with Linux and XBMC installed.
This is what keeps me awake at work, and at night.
This is my work. Welcome to my life!

Pulau Redang occupants

My favourite past time at work and at home is globe-trotting via Google Earth (installed it from http://earth.google.com), and I "went" to Pulau Redang. Anyway what I found fascinating is that, there's actually a town or village in the middle of the island (in yellow circle). If you zoom in, there's actually around hundred houses there. I wondered who lived there? I miss Redang, and I want to try just taking a ferry there, and find a chalet during the March school holiday, and stay there for a week.
